MODELING/GIS, RISK ASSESSMENT, ECONOMIC IMPACT Novel Carboxamides as Potential Mosquito Repellents

چکیده
A model was developed using 167 carboxamide derivatives, from the United States Department of Agriculture archival database, that were tested as arthropod repellents over the past 60 yr. An artiÞcial neural network employing CODESSA PRO descriptors was used to construct a quantitative structure-activity relationship model for prediction of novel mosquito repellents. By correlating the structure of these carboxamides with complete protection time, a measure of repellency based on duration, 34 carboxamides were predicted as candidate mosquito repellents. There were four additional compounds selected on the basis of their structural similarity to those predicted. The compounds were synthesized either by reaction of 1-acylbenzotriazoles with secondary amines or by reaction of acid chlorides with secondary amines in the presence of sodium hydride. The biological efÞcacy was assessed by duration of repellency on cloth at two dosages (25 and 2.5 mol/cm) and by the minimum effective dosage to prevent Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) bites. One compound, (E)-N-cyclohexyl-N-ethyl-2-hexenamide, was superior to N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) at both the high dosage (22 d versus 7 d for deet) and low dosage (5 d versus 2.5 d for deet). Only one of the carboxamides, hexahydro-1-(1-oxohexyl)-1H-azepine, had aminimum effective dosage that was equivalent or slightly better than that of deet (0.033 mol/cm versus 0.047 mol/cm).

متن کاملRemote Sensing and Modeling of Mosquito Abundance and Habitats in Coastal Virginia, USA
The increase in mosquito populations following extreme weather events poses a major threat to humans because of mosquitoes’ ability to carry disease-causing pathogens, particularly in low-lying, poorly drained coastal plains vulnerable to tropical cyclones. In areas with reservoirs of disease, mosquito abundance information can help to identify the areas at higher risk of disease transmission. ...
متن کاملA new in vitro bioassay system for discovery of novel human-use mosquito repellents.
A Klun & Debboun (K&D) test module, previously developed and used for quantitative measurement of the efficacy of mosquito repellents on human volunteers, was adapted for in vitro evaluation of repellents by coupling the module with a membrane-blood reservoir. Performance of Deet, Bayrepel, and SS-220 insect repellents in the new in vitro system was compared with their performance on humans aga...
متن کاملCurrent and Future Repellent Technologies: The Potential of Spatial Repellents and Their Place in Mosquito-Borne Disease Control
Every year, approximately 700,000 people die from complications associated with etiologic disease agents transmitted by mosquitoes. While insecticide-based vector control strategies are important for the management of mosquito-borne diseases, insecticide-resistance and other logistical hurdles may lower the efficacy of this approach, especially in developing countries. Repellent technologies re...
متن کاملModel Integration For Assessing Future Hydroclimate Impacts On Water Resources, Agricultural Economic Sustainability And Environmental Quality
The US National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change provides compelling arguments for serious consideration of actions and adaptive measures by countries around the world to better manage impacts on water resources, agricultural economic sustainability and environmental quality. National resource planning at this scale requires integrated impact analysis t...
